If you get to Los Angeles, I highly recommend Honda of Hollywood. I brought
them my un-mounted wheels and tires I purchased online and they mounted and
dynamic balanced both for $46.

Guys, bought some new tires for my Reflex and looking for a good mechanic to
put them on for a resonable price. Also, would like to find a good mechanic
for repairs if and when needed. I am in Huntington Beach. Thanks for any
info you guys may have.

I do (most) service, K-Mods, tires, parts replacement, etc. for free in Ventura, CA.

I don't normally charge for service as it is usally pretty quick, you have to travel all the way to Ventura, and I'm not licensed nor do I have liability insurance. You do have to provide the parts.

I have yet to have anyone complain about the level or quality of the free service.

quick note. I went to Auto Zone here is LA county and the owner said they were phasing out the Duplicolor an going to go to another vendor. I doubt it will be as good - only because everything is going to cheaper and not as good.

Dupli color is Sherwin Williams...  Look for a Sherwin Williams Automotive Stores in your area....   Do NOT mistake Sherwin Williams Automotive for Sherwin Williams Retail Stores(house paint)...

Please note,
Your Scooter is NOT K-modded. If it were you would not have any Black rollers in there!

Further, will worn rollers also cause a decrease in gas mileage? I changed the oil, final drive fluid, spark plug, air filter, new belt, resurfaced variator faces, but gas mileage has gone down from 65-67 mpg to 60-63 mpg. Are there any others factors that could influence this reduction in fuel economy?

I don't know what the K-mod does for or against fuel economy, so no
comments for that. But the rollers do have service limits. So you need to change them if they are beyond specs. In my 2001-2006 Service
Manual, section 10 DRIVE PULLEY/DRIVEN PULLEY/CLUTCH, page 10-2 under troubleshooting, subject - Poor performance at high speed or lack of power. It lists probable causes:
* Worn drive belt
* Weak drive face spring
* Worn weight rollers
* Contaminated pulley faces

So according to this info, I would have to say yes, worn weight rollers can affect MPG. So when you do drive line maintenance, just
make the roller weights an item for inspection.

Standards and service limits are listed on 10-1 of the service manual
along with torque values for items in this section.

You've replaced the belt and say you've resurfaced the variator faces. Some reasonable questions may include:

# In what way have you resurfaced the variator faces?
# Could the resurfacing not have had the desired effect?
# Is it possible that pulley faces got contaminated with gear oil?

About the other items you listed:

# Did you gap the spark plug and tighten it down to specs?
# Was the air filter seated and sealed properly at install?
# Did you add too much engine oil?(excess will get vented up into air
box and clog the air filter)
# Are tires properly inflated?
# Are you riding the bike differently?
# Are you calculating MPG different in any way than before?

BTW, that is a relatively small drop in mpg. To detect drops that small in mpg requires fairly consistant riding and lots of accurate
fuel use and mileage data. (I have record of every ounce of gas and its cost and miles traveled since I first got a 2004 Reflex that now belongs to my brother. It's his responsibility now if he cares to.)

Anyway, hope this helps you find the cause for the mpg discrepancy.

Black rollers in a "K-mod" unit? I don't think so...

The outside of the BEIGE rollers (which should be the ONLY rollers in a K-modded variator - and in the slots NOT marked "BK") and the BLACK rollers ARE interchangeable plastic sleeves - so someone MIGHT have swapped them...

Full roller sets are available from Honda for under $15 - and yes, flat spots can mess up variator operation.

As for replacement interval, you are correct that it is not specified - have a set available to change them when you change the belt if needed - which should be every 10,000 (not 12,000) miles.

Lower gas mileage could be weather, fuel brand, slipping belt, non-stock belt (some are narrower than stock), more aggressive riding, stuck Starting Enrichment Valve (SEV), overfilled oil (oil gets into air filter), low tire pressure.

The amount you noted is less than 10% - measurement error could account for a small discrepancy...

Hope that helps

Thanks guys for all of the great feedback!

I have been known as a black or white thinker in the past. This time I got stuck in black! My Bad! I meant white rollers. I will replace the rollers as per Bruce's suggestion. Regarding surfacing the variator faces, I removed the glaze on them with some very fine emery paper and then polished with some 000 steel wool. There were some very minor grooves on the variator faces, but they were almost completely removed through the minor abrasion process. I made sure not to get any lubrication fluid on any of the faces, variator or clutch pulley.

Bruce, you mentioned the SEV and a potential problem with sticking. Are there any other symptoms that might occur with the engine operation should this happen, such as rough idling etc.,? What is the best way to diagnose this problem?

Also thanks for the great schematic for constructing the variator puller. It worked just as intended!

Tony

Stainless steel is better - can be polished to look almost like chrome - won't oxidize - more scratch resistant and durable.

Try a sheet metal shop for scrap pieces - if you're nice, they will probably even roll it for you...

Also can be had in junk yards - used as lower panel trim on some vehicles.

Very unusual offer - 2004 Flex with only 82 miles

Posted by: "saavedrajohn" saavedra@mindspring.com   saavedrajohn

I live near Columbia, SC. In the local TRADER tabloid-type classified ads, I see this:
2004 Honda Reflex Scooter, bright red, like new, no scratches, dents, etc. 82 actual miles. Garage housed. Retailed new for over $5000. Must see to appreciate. Helmet and rain gear incl. $3500. 803-736-4571

I have no idea who this is, and I have no vested interest in this, but if someone reading this is considering buying, this might be worth pursuing.
