It is every thing I expected. There have been no surprises.
I've made it to work and back 2 1/2 days now. I'm still alive.

I called the honda dealer in lake city where I had my last sets done (I did
avon's this past time on the flex) and they said they'd be glad to mount the
car tire on the scooter, I just can't buy it from them (in which case they'd
mount for free) They only sell motorcycle tires.

They quoted 54.00 to mount it. It's sitting here. I don't know, I'm still
oscillating on it. I could always just do a set of OEM's again.

My rear avon, at 8000 miles, looks like the OEM did at 10,000, so they
certainly won't last as long but they were much "grippier" than the oem, as
it's a softer rubber apparently. I have nothing bad to say about the avon
stryke's.

Ok, well I just thought I'd ask how you were faring with your darkside tire.

Thanks for replying!

Hey, if you drive it like a car, meaning you commute ton of miles
or you go from point A to point B put on a car tire!! If you like to scoot around the twisty's like I do than get a set of motorcycle tires! Thats the only reason I can see to do it! I'm not for it or against it!! Give your car tire to some one on the owners group
someone will use it!!
This ain't Cuba yet!! you can still buy motorcycle tires here !!

Take the car tire and the rim to a tire store, like Big o tire or what ever you have near you,you will find one that will mount it,and won't charge you an arm and a leg.
Phillip/riding around palm springs with my car tire in 88 weather/life is good

We Idon't have those here. I asked pep boys and another shop and they said
they couldn't do motorcycle tires. I also really don't have the right setup
here to do wheel removal. I do all other maintenance though.

I figure the 54.00 is a little steep yes, but I will probably never be
putting another rear tire on again, so it's a one time fee so to speak.

If I get 25,000 out of this tire my flex will be at 70,000 miles, something
tells me this would be the last rear tire ever mounted if it doesn't get a
flat.

Thank you for your suggestion! I do appreciate it.

I expected the tire to handle like a squared off hoop. It does. Knowing that, I am not surprised when I feel it "come off the edge".
I am also experiencing a higher top speed. I did not expect that and I have NOT confirmed my ACTUAL speed with a GPS yet. Before, my speedo was ~5% off. I will mount my GPS and do some testing at various speeds.

And one thing else if you don't mind noting, what about rpm's at say a
certain speed if you can remember what they were before and now with the
taller tire, I'm very curious on that as most of what I do is at 60mph.
Ok? I'm thinking they will be noticeably less, as you've already noticed a
better top end. THANKS!

Thanks for sharing. Since I consider you a conservative when it comes to
the reflex your reactions to this (the tire) are meaningful, at least to me.

If the circumference of the new tire is larger than that of the previous tire, the following will occur:

+ Higher top speed
+ Better MPG
- Worse acceleration
- Slower (steep) hill climbs

because the larger circumference changes the overall drive ratio.

The speedometer readings will not be affected because it reads from the FRONT wheel.

For what it's worth

Since you're "living on the dark side" anyhow, why not take a wood block wrapped with coarse sandpaper - hold it against the outer edge of the tire while running (spinning) on the center stand (using the engine) - to remove some of the "hips" that make the tire square-ish?
There is no cord in that area of a tire.

That is why I think I have a higher top end.
I noticed the RPMS lower on my freeway commute.

I think that I'll NOT alter the tire at all. I know that others have taken abrasives to their tires to get more mileage out of them. I'll live with what I have for now.

Your explanation about the taller tire makes sense. I will be verifying my posted vs actual speed with my GPS to see if anything has changed.

Thanks Tim!

And thanks Bruce for piping in on what to expect from the taller tire. Your
idea on shaving the "squareness" was interesting too.

I never would have expected Tim to do this so I'm very curious what he has
to say. I'm not promoting this either,
I have one sitting here but chickened out and bought avon's this last time
because I wanted to see how they were compared to the hoop.

I recently installed the "Avon Viper Stryke AM63 Scooter Tires" on my 2002 Reflex, and they seem to be an excellent tire so far. I've only put about 1,000 miles on them, but they seem to be a good tire for the price ($42 rear/$39 Front). I'll report the lifespan of the tire once I reach that point. I live in a very mountainous region of Virginia and they get plenty of side wear and hill climbing experience. My driveway alone is quite a climb! I think you made a good choice for the $$.

I am very pleased with the Stryke's. I could tell a big difference over the
hoop. However you won't get the miles out of one, especially the rear you
would the OEM Hoop. You will, however, appreciate the softer rubber if you
enjoy twisties and traffic circles :)

That reflex actually handles better than the silverwing or my vulcan 750 for
small space issues, and tight corners. For a high speed type of curve,
however I would prefer the vulcan or the swing.

Good Luck with yours and let us know how you like em after you've done some
riding on them!
