I did the brake pads as well.
I do have a tire changer, but I'm getting old and my levers aren't long
enough for the 12" wheel.
I also needed a valve stem as there was a tube in the tire. The same shop
put in the tube after I picked up a nail with 100 miles on a new Hoop. This
shop is around the corner and the 'tire guy' is big, young, and has longgggg
levers.

I'll do the valves (mine have never needed adjustment) when I do the next
belt @30,000 or possibly the next oil @24,000.

Gee, I'm thinking the trend is growing. Welcome!

I'm taking my darkside to the Tail of the Dragon shortly. Of course, there will be pictures.

I'm also selling a 145/80R12 Goodyear President at cost, $55. They'll be on eBay soon.

Welcome to the "Darkside" Tim. I don't think you will be disappointed
with the handling and wear of the car tire. You should notice a small
improvement in fuel economy, but maybe not enough to get real excited
about. At least not until gas gets something beyond $3/gal. It's Then
that every little bit WILL make a difference. I have the opinion that
gas prices will go up significantly this year. (just a gut feeling.)
For myself, a more significant improvement in MPG came with not being
so heavy with the throttle and puting the 155/80R12 on back, which is
a taller tire and has even more of that higher gearing effect. But it
involves modifying the swingarm, which is something that some are not
willing to do. The other thing most are unwilling to do, (mainly
because they are not aware of the concept) is puting a rear scooter
tire on the front. Actually puting a rear tire up front is something
that even most mainstream darksiders don't do. Even for them it can
be controversial. It's still mostly experimental so the jury is still
out on that idea. However, as it is with the car tire on back, I have
confidence and comfort with the performance so far. And, also as it was with the car tire on back, there was a brief period of adjustment to the feel/handling that was slightly different than the standard
scooter tire. Not difficult, just a little different.

BTW, I put right at 11,000 miles on the 145/70R12 on the 2004 Reflex
before I changed over to the 155/80R12 car tire and it barely shows any wear. Remember, I changed over to the 155/80R12 ONLY because it
was a taller tire. The 145/70R12 is my "spare" all set on a rim with
bearings and brake disk just ready to mount when needed.
(this will be posted over on the other group as well.)

Enjoy your new ride.

This is almost a little spooky....

I also replaced my valve stem. The old one wasn't bad, just "old & original". I posed the question here a few months back about them, then bought 2 of these:

http://tinyurl.com/yzfqnze

It would be a shame if the lil ol' valve stem is what caused you to farm out the tire labor, cuz the stem was real easy to install. Now that TIRE, on the other hand, let me tell you!

I thought you were one of those Merlin Olsen type fellas. Me, on the other hand, is a Danny DeVito type fella, at 5'6". I'm not gonna lie though, that tire took ALOT of effort to get on the rim. The ONE lever that comes with the tire changer was NOT ENOUGH...I also needed 2 large screwdrivers, Armour All and a carpenter's clamp too (note to self...go out & buy 3 large "C" clamps!).

Now all I gotta do is put it all back together.

Bubble

PS: The clutch shoes @ 35k have LOTS of life left.

While I am sort of 'burley', I've watched 'tire guys' work and I don't have
the tools required.
The guy who did my car tire places the wheel on the ground to get the second
bead on (with the help of LONGGGGG levers and his knees).
I will look for longer levers and will most likely do my own front tire next
time it needs replacing.

Can't go wrong with the OEM Bridgestone Hoop.
Many people have tried many different brands and have posted messages about
them.
You could do a search of the message archives for LOTS of information.

I got 12,000 out of the last rear OEM and almost 14,000 out of the last
front OEM.

My friend's 05 has 11,000 miles on it with the original tires, his front
still looks good, the rear is a bit worn.

I probably rode mine longer than others would have.

This last round I put on avon stryke's. At 8,000 the rear looks like the
oem hoop did at 12,000, however the front avon still looks good.

Here's the video we took at bike week of the harley's doing burnouts:

Reflex vs Helix

Posted by: "jhcaudill" jnscaudills@msn.com   jhcaudill

Sun Mar 14, 2010 6:27 pm (PDT)

I guess I'm a little confused. At one time I rode a friend's Honda Helix while he borrowed my Goldwing (2 or 3 week trip he went on). I liked the Helix just fine, and so, when I decided to get a scooter (in addition to my Goldwing) I went looking for a Helix. Along the way, I discovered the Reflex, and promptly purchased a 2002 model. My impression was that the Reflex was the "new and improved" replacement for the Helix (since the Helix was designed in the early 80's). Now, I see ads for 1986 Helix's for upwards of $2000 and later models with asking prices of well over $3,000.

Is the Helix a better/more desirable scooter that the Reflex? I thought they had basically the same engine(displacement wise) and drivetrain. Is there more to this story?

They do but they ride so much better than our Reflexs. They are smooth over bumps and pot holes. If they were as good at higher speeds like on the freeway,I would get rid of my Reflex and get one.

Both have their followers. The Helix is supposed to have the most comfortable standard seat of all scooters. The real question is which one do you like? The Helix appears to have gained some cult following. I, personally, prefer the SilverWing.

Having personally never ridden a SWing, I'd love to hear your reasons why. I see myself upgrading to it, or it's successor, when my Reflex wears out (or wears ME out).

Speaking of which...has the SWing been officially dis-continued??

I own a reflex and silverwing, see my photos section.

If you've ever wanted a little more stability in windy situations, a more
stable ride at high speeds, or more power, (all the things a reflex rider
sometimes longs for) the Swing delivers.

You can twist this thing's throttle and you are going from 0-100 and kickin
a** on anything else trying to keep up with you. Yes, I just got back from
bike week and I outran every single harley that tried to play with me, most
gsxr's (until they got into 4th or 5th gear), most every custom chopper.
Nobody could keep up with me as they had to go through gears and I was in my
powerband the entire time from 0-to about 100 mph where it begins to slow
it's acceleration down. I drew crowds after racing some of these guys
because they wanted to know what "kind of scooter" is THAT?!?

You can cruise 65mph on it and be running about 5,000 rpm. It's redline is
the same as the reflex so you can imagine it's cruising abilities.

It's a reflex on steriods, weighs close to 200 lbs more, and is much more
comfy on long trips (if you ever do those) It's a parallel twin, smooth,
it's fuel injected and there are power commanders and some roller weights
which fit the stock variator and will lower your rpm's at highway speeds
thus improving fuel economy. If I take it easy and ride 65, I get about 51
mpg, about 20 less than the reflex (thus my reflex is my daily driver)

I would recommend you go ride one and see for yourself.

No, they are not discontinued I saw 2010 models being advertised (unless I'm
mistaken), if I am, they were in production through 2009 with no changes
(like the reflex run) since 2002. I have a 2002 model.

Go ride one you'll love it!

Oh, I just like the power and acceleration the SWing has. It's main drawback is it's weight, but that adds to its stability on the highway. Gas mileage does suffer, however, but i didn't buy a scooter to worry about gas mileage. I bought it for pure enjoyment and the SWing just gives me more of that.
