Your mistake is in "Well, if you can't trust an internet vendor WHO CAN you
trust??" Technically, you should question all Internet vendors. The
Internet is rife with scams and has, in fact, more scams than you can shake
a stick at. For every valid Internet vendor there's probably at least 10
illegal vendor scams out there. I'm not saying stay away from Internet
shopping because I do a lot of my shopping there. I'm saying "buyer beware"
because if it looks too good to be true, it really is.

Well, if you can't trust an internet vendor WHO CAN you trust?? Thanks for
correcting me, Tim. I would not deliberately suggest violating copyright

As you can probably tell by now, copyright is a sensitive issue with this group. With good reason. I agree with them regarding the manual. I have two copies; one clean for study and one to beat, fondle with greasy fingers, spill coffee, dog ear, etc. WORTH EVERY PENNY!

The gurus are right about drive belts. Be very sure of your tires, too. With such low mileage, your tires will look really good but they don't have "roll" time which actually does contribute to keeping them fresh. Personally, I would replace 6-year-old tires.

I'm glad that the "copyright police" have been reigned in, and I'll try and offer some constuctive advice. First Helm doesn't own the rights to the literature, Honda does. My Honda service manual says "copyright symbol" (I can't reproduce it)"Honda Motor Co. Ltd. Tokyo, Japan - All Rights Reserved".

It used to be that when you joined Honda Rider's Club of America (and paid them the membership fee) that they gave you access to an online version of the factory service manual. I don't remember whether this was downloadable or not, but you could certainly print the relevant pages you needed. So, there may be legitimate electronic versions of this manual available.

Today, you can join the HRCA for free, and they allow you access to an all-inclusive service manual for their scooters and motorcycles. I believe you can also download a maintnenace schedule and owners manual. The link still says that paid members get access to ONE specific service manual.

Here's a link:

I'm a paid member of HRCA. With payment which is only 19.95 a year, you can
select one manual for usage during the term of your membership, and yes,
it's printable, though not downloadable. Thus, you could print the manual
if so inclined. You also have access to the "generic" version that you are
referring to they allow you to peek at without subscription.

This group has some excellent writeups in the files section. My first belt
and roller change, and rear gear oil change was by Bruce's wonderfully
assembled word and pdf docs.

I purchased an "online" one from ebay and learned later that the seller had
no rights to be selling it. If it's not the original printed manual, I
think it's been determined without ambiguity that there are no legal pdf
versions being sold on ebay. Tim has taken the time to contact the parties
and verify their positions on this.

By the way, Bike Week was awesome.

COPYRIGHT INFRINGMENT (was Re: Honda Reflex Group Re: Howdy from way

Tim, I agree 100% with you. There are so many scams out there. That is why I thought I would contact a "Copyright/Tradesmark" attorney.
I know, as probably you know too, that there are companies out there that DO have agreements/license with Co's who own trademarks/copywrites, especially in this day of instant information and access,to make available for a fee books, manuals, maps and so on. Most trademarks/copywrite owners would rather have a fee paid to them for said manual or whatever because they not only get the fee for the copyright but for the printing cost etc.. I know in having a license to reproduce music does not cost much compared to what I can make in using that music for entertainment. Example; Elvis Presley could not have made the money he made or his estate makes today w/o not only owning the copyrights to his music, but, making agreements with publishers and other companies to reproduce the music. It's the same way with books, manuals , etc., etc.. When you pay $10.00 for a piece of sheet music, there is probably $2.00 of that that goes to the copyright/tradesmark owner. The rest goes to the publisher for the type setting, printing, shipping and advertising.

Good argument Steve. But consider the price here. Even electronic versions
of books are not sold at 20% of the paper versions of the book. Publisher's
are still protecting their traditional format pricing. I can't imagine
Helm's contract with Honda would include an okay to sell the electronic
version at such a bargain especially since Helm makes available electronic
versions of some manuals with other manufacturers.

Right. And that is why Helm Inc. has told me that there are NO LEGAL DOWNLOADABLE copies of their COPYRIGHTED material.

Unless your "Copyright/Tradesmark" attorney has a relationship with Helm Inc., he really can't answer the direct question of ILLEGAL material from Helm Inc.

Hey, finally got a reply from my coptwrite/trademark lawyer bro-n-law. The info he has shows that the company in question DOES HAVE THE LICENSE for not only the Reflex but several other manuals to make them available for download. He was somewhat surprised by the "loww fee". He felt that $25.00 per download would not have been out of line. But then he said if some wants to spend $$ for a reem of paper, a cartraige or 2 of black ink and the time it takes to download, or the space it takes up on most home computers, then...thats just fine. The trademark shown on the manual is solely owned by Honda.
With all this stuff on who owns copywrites and all, I wonder how many cpyrights Mr K-mod owns? Since he writes manunals. Think how much $$ he would make if he owned the copywrites for the K-mod.

If the plastic farings are the same...  I have all the molds and pieces in fiberglass and carbon fiber...  Including hard saddlebags and large trunk...  I like the carbon fiber better...  Lighter...  stronger...  and don't have to paint if you don't want to...  Bulletproof jackets are made of carbon fiber...

STO 2010 will be September 15-18 in Eureka Springs, AR. If you like riding in the twisties, you will love riding in the Ozarks. Below is a rally update posted by STO Rally Coordinator/Director Lou Larson this morning.

Tressa

"I'm happy to announce that The Jim Evans family will be catering our BBQ this year. Some of you may know Jim from past Scootercades. He did the BBQ's then. Jim is anxious to get back to doing this for us & looking forward to seeing some old friends & meeting new.
Jim will be serving us Pulled Pork, Smoked Chicken & BBQ Bologna with all the fixin's to go with it!

I have also made arrangements with Pizza Hut for catering out Pizza Night.
Both events will be served from the back hall building on the Travelers Grounds

I spoke with Jerry of the Travelers this morning & he informed me that their is only 14 rooms left@ the Travelers. So again I Highly suggest that if you know your going to come to STO 2010 & want to stay where the action is, Book your rooms NOW. Once the Travelers Is booked full. I will post other Lodging infromation. Jerry owns two other motels in Eureka & has offered the same $50.00 per night plus tax with no weekend rate hikes to ALL STO Rally attendee's at ALL of his motels.
Best way to reserve your room is through his webpage.
http://www.travelersinn.com/

Yep, I have the Marc Parnes balancer. I bought the universal because I also have a Honda Goldwing which requires the universal cone set. I did use it to balance my Reflex front tire and it did a perfect job. You cannot use the rod that comes with the balancer for the Reflex. The rod is too large in diameter to fit through the center of the Relex front wheel. I simply used the front axle of the Flex with the cones provided with the balancer placed on the axle. The cones keep the wheel centered on the axle, and even though the cones are slightly too big in the center, it worked perfectly! FYI, the Cycle Hill Manual Tire Changer has the same problem with the Reflex. The smallest rod they provide is still too large to fit through the front wheel. Again, I just used the front axle as a pivot point, but I must admit it was a bit short to make the manual tire change an easy one. I'll be looking for a suitable "longer" rod for the next change.

BTW, all the bike shops around my area "will not" install a tire which was not purchased through them. And the nearest shops charge $35-40 to mount and balance a tire. I can buy tires online much cheaper than the shops so, Ergo, my own tire changing station came to be.....Also, you can buy the Cycle Hill Balancer for about $79 and it's probably just as good as the $105 Marc Parnes one. I'm not sure if you can use it with the front axle as I did with the Marc Parnes one because it has a fixed spacing between the bearings.

Hope this helps!
