If an $80 cover has holes where there aren't supposed to be any, you've been ripped off.

I paid $75 for a Nelson-Rigg full cover that has served well for several years. NOTE: Do NOT try to find a "scooter" cover for the Reflex. The full-size large motorcycle fits maxi-scooters nicely.

Or, as long as the exhaust system is cold, you could always use a tired old bed sheet and some rope. :)

Measuring resistance in low Ohms can be difficult. Check your meter
with the probes shorted and see what you get. It may not be zero, in
which case the tare reading should be subtracted from the measurements.
Not all meters automatically zero, and you are probably measuring the
test lead resistance. If all the voltage measurements are ok I would
not change anything. I would expect battery voltage to decrease a wee
bit with increasing load, but it depends on the regulating circuit.
Also this is not rocket science, and most any old multimeter is
acceptable.

While I do not have a 2004 (and I did not test my 2003) your numbers sound
like you have a properly functioning charging system. If your battery is
ding I would guess that you have a short, possibly in the battery itself.
I would try disconnecting the battery and charge it until the voltage stops
increasing. Let it set for a couple of days. If the voltage holds up the
problem is not your battery.

Do you know how to test for a short? If not reply back and I will outline a
simple procedure.

BTW, are you sure that the under-seat light is turning off?

I'm trying to troubleshoot a dead battery/electrical issue and I would like
to compare my observed voltages with other people. All tests should be from
a 2004+ reflex since mine is a 2004. I'm trying to figure out if my charging
system is working the way it should. Thanks in advance for the help.

With the scooter off, what voltage do you read for the battery? Mine is at
12.84 volts.
What voltage do you measure at the battery at idle? Mine is 14.38-14.44
volts.
How about idle with the high beam on? Mine is 14.27-13.75 volts.
And what are your numbers for these tests performed at 5000rpms? Mine is
about 14.4 volts across the board.
Also, if you have accessories, what does your voltage read while running
that at idle with the high beam on? With my heated grips on high, my voltage
drops to 13.27-12.9 volts.

Thanks for the help!

The dead battery loses it's charge shortly after being removed from the charger. I'm certain it is dead.

As for the underseat light, I'm pretty sure it's going off. When I depress the button/switch with the seat up, it only takes light pressure to turn it off. And I make sure both seat latches catch before I ride. Do these have a habit of staying on with the seat completely closed?

You may want to consider reducing the draw from the seat light by investing
in a LED bulb. Check out

Your charging system is OK.

#1) At all times your charging system was producing in excess of 12v, enough to at least trickle charge the battery.

#2) At speed you were making in excess of 14v, more than enough to charge the battery.

Close enough - and in fact, the alternator changed in 2004 - but the manual I have does not indicate different readings in respect to that change. So your readings are probably normal, but certainly not justification for changing any parts.

Hi Cathy -- I bought one of the Hi Power festoon bulbs -- it's got what looks like two 1-watt Surface Mount LEDs on a little card between the two connectors...

Wanting something that closely matched the original, I went with "Warm White" as the color temp, and I have to say it's considerably brighter than the old incandescent bulb -- and uses less power!

My favorite find-everything hardware supplier is McMaster-Carr
(http://www.mcmaster.com).

Look in YP (phone) or web local for fastener wholesale suppliers; locally in
Sunnyvale, CA there is Oleander, who seem to have every imaginable fastener
in bulk form. They have a $10 minimum, but that's easily met- metric, SAE or
even (Whitworth mebbe, I haven't tried).
Staff is very capable and prompt, tho they usually service the local hi-tech
firms, they do mail-order, too.
BTW, I had some success replacing those fragile plastic trim tabs with metal
equivalents- the trick is to find the right dimensioned bracket that can be
epoxied or screwed in place with countersunk screws or rivets that are
bondo'ed over and finished to original surface. Large broken-out sections
can be replaced with portions of cut-up plastic bucket (the white commercial
sort made for paints and chemicals). Cut and sand to shape then use
fiberglass tape and epoxy on the inside to secure in place. Finish with
wet-or-dry emery paper and rattlecan. I have done so with the left side of
cowl, after two years, it's still goood- no splits or cracks.
A tougher deal is whittling replacements for the slotted matching parts, but
it can be done with a coping saw and wood rasp. The tab parts may need
replacement with custom-made metal stock with a broad perforated base for
epoxy fastening.
Hope this helps. Lewis Crewe, AKA Phil C.

Thanks - and it WILL suffice. I have one.

But this is one I use and recommend - from Sears - very rugged - high quality Craftsman.
Auto-ranging, auto-shutoff (no dead batteries), current, frequency, capacitance, resistance, TEMPERATURE... built-in stand and rubber "shell". Probes included. About $30. A great value.

BTW, a nice feature to have is the "auto-off" feature. If the meter requires you to manually turn it off, the battery will be dead each time you go to use it. I can never remember to turn that switch off!

George, I also have several of the meter I got at $3 sales & they all work perfect. Wished I could think of the expensive one I used at work when digitals first came out. It only last about a year. The good old analog never has to be turned off. It still works fine. 44 years & counting, that's my backup. Rick in KY

I have several of them and consider them junk. A few never worked out of the
