I'd be especially curious to hear from non-U.S. riders, about the state of the low-end bike market, and it's effect on the "big boys" - Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Piaggio etc. where they live.
>

Hello,

About what you said, this Christmas I was in Milan and in the city you see only scoots and big scoots. There the motorcycle is not considered a "luxury" but more an alternative to the car.
I don't know how they manage with the sales because they too have been hit by this situation. Considering that a scoot is way more cheap to run than a car maybe the scoot market has risen.
I saw there the Forza which is more stream line than the Reflex but more or less the same thing.
And about the chineese scoots, I didn't see much of them, they prefer big scoots such as the Tmax, Swing, Burgman and from what I know there are few chineese scoots with big engines.
For the small engine scoots there is the popular Vespa which can't be beaten in its own country.

Hope this helps.

Here in now-dripping-wet-but-normally-sunny Southern California, I am seeing lots of new scooters on the road...and they are, indeed, mostly of the cheap Chinese variety. The young riders probably don't care that they won't be able to find parts- or service for their `transit toys' in two years - they regard them as temporary & disposable transportation.

Re; hosting motorcycle shows in the northeast in winter; I can't imagine anything more anachronistic than trying to sell exposed, inherently-unstable vehicles when there's snow on the ground, and ice in the trees.

Is it due to more lax import regulations here, or that the Italians, Aussies, etc. place a higher value in quality (clearly a significant percentage of the U.S. population does NOT). Hello

In Australia The motorcycle market is down 13 % I think. Scooter sales are
down in 2009 also I Have a Honda SH 150 RRP$ 6,800 but most scooters are
from Asia because they are cheaper around $3 to 4,000 for a 125/200 size
piaggio are selling lots of the Chinese 125 Fly great scooter with the
Vespa drive train $3500. a very good scooter for the price my daughter has
one of these we also have heaps of Chinese scooters with odd names that some
people buy but backup is non existence. Our petrol is now $5.85 a litre but
people still drive the 4 WD I think you call them a SUV but there is amove
to smaller cars from Japan and Europe our GM Holden and Ford Falcon which
are large rear wheel drive cars are mostly selling to Fleets owners ie
company cars .

The SH150 is not selling I think it is too expensive but a great scooter
and very economical I get 36 KM litre in traffic. And it will do 120 Kph
flat out or cruse on 110 KPH . Honda do sell quite a few 100 CC 4 stroke
Honda Lead with 10 " wheels as they are only $2,500 ok for local town
travel.

I enjoy your group as some of the info will hopefully flow to the SH 150. Do
you know of a dedicated group for my scoot.

Buy from Down under

Rob

That's not completely accurate. My neighbor bought the Chinese knockoff of the Honda SH150i. Almost none of the parts are interchangable. We've been to the local Honda dealer for replacements parts and nothing matches. If they were, getting parts would be a breeze. He has to jump through hoops with various suppliers of Chinese scooter parts.

Well your clone is better than my neighbor's clone. Our experience has been the complete opposite.

You can travel anywhere around Europe and you will find a ton of scooters and motorcycles on the road. There are many reasons for that. Europe is notorious for narrow roads. Plus, they have been dealing with high fuel prices for years. Let's just say they are ahead of the curve when it comes to fuel efficiency and mobility.

I have a number of theories why scooters have little appeal in the US.

1. Americans have a love affair with their automobiles. The bigger the better. First with big US built autos of the 50's, 60's and 70's. More currently with trucks and SUVs. We'd rather buy a hybrid auto with its inherent and expensive future maintenance costs for "mediocre" gas mileage today. Remember, compact cars of the late 1970's and early 1980's were getting 50+ MPG.

2. Many Americans portray riders of motorcycles and scooters as a subculture of bandits. "One percenters" like the Hells Angels and Outlaws motorcycle "clubs" only feed the portrayal.

3. Honda has often misread the US marketplace. The US only gets a taste of the their full scooter menu. Take a peek at the Honda Japan website and see what you are missing. How can we get excited with the same old models year after year? Can anyone tell me what substantially changed on the Honda Elite 80 from its inception until it was removed from production?

4. Honda has stood pat on their pricing believing their quality justifies higher prices. Fact is many of their scooters are manufactured in countries with very low labor costs. While they can't compete with China in terms of cost, Honda's product cost isn't anywhere close to being as expensive as we are led to believe.

5. In 2008 when our fuel costs were exceeding $4.00 per gallon, the Chinese manufactures flooded the US market with a bunch a really nice looking crap. Honda should have responded by cutting prices across the board allowing buyers to give Honda stronger consideration. I bet a number of people walked into a Honda dealer, saw the price tag and walked right out.

6. Honda rolls out the SH150i at a MSRP of $4,499. The real pricing threshold for a 150cc scooter in the US is about $3,000. People in the market for scooters can easily find a well maintained, little used preowned Reflex (250cc) under $2,500. Plus, I can find a shiny new Chinese knockoff of the SH150i for about $1,200.

When will we see the Forza, Jazz or Reflex 250/350 in the US? I wouldn't hold my breath.

Neil "The Tax Dude®" Johnson
Proud ownwer of a 2001 Honda Reflex and 2002 Honda Elite 80

Jim, I have a 2006 honda reflex sport, do you make hard saddlebags for this model? Would like pictures and prices. Thanks  Richard

Jim,

If you got some pictures of the trunk and hard saddlebags, I could be interested. You send them direct to me at taxdude@covad. net.

Do you mean $5.85 a gallon? It is $1.33 a litre today. When it was around $1.60 before the GFC scooters were flying off the shelves so I don't think we are too far away from a surge in popularity again. But at $10000 or whatever they are now I think not many Forza's will be sold.Piaggio seems much better at marketing and selling their scooters even though they are also expensive.

Part # looks the same for the 01 and the 05 honda part #.

I don't have any experience with aftermarket brake pads though. Perhaps
someone else can chime in and tell you their experiences.

For the drive belt and brake pads I use genuine honda oem.

Speedometer Issue

Speedometer seems to be sticking. Odometer works fine. The speedometer works sometimes, but has been getting stuck at 30mph. Should I just replace it? Any help would be appreciated.

Getting to the cable is very easy. I would try to grease the cable first,
and see if that fixes you up. The auto parts store should have the proper
lubricant.

I believe I saw a set of guages on ebay not long ago, so that's always an
option too.

Last time this came up i think it was Bruce who said the speedo is quite
complicated to try to take apart yourself.

I'm sure he'll chime in with a reply too.

I guess if it sticks at a certan point that kind of points to it not being a
lubrication problem though.
