Synthetic oil is great stuff! Why else would car manufacturers like Mercedes Benz and BMW put it their brand new cars while on the assembly line? Nothing much wrong with dino oil either, just the synth oil is better in the "lubing" dept then dino. Plus, in most cases you can go further between oil changes. With my Vulcan 1500 I could go 5k instead of 3k between. You also don't have to be so worried when you do go past the time of oil change. Val synth is very good stuff from what I have been told.

I darkside.

1) 155/80 R12 car tire,
2) unsure of manufacturer...
3) installed June 09
4) I live in downtown Atlanta, and therefore have to occasionally drive agressively.
5) The car tire handles better, provides better gas mileage (overall 5% improvement) and has no noticeable wear after 5k miles...

Anyone opposed should try it. I spent less than $40 on the tire, mounted and balanced... Trust me, you'll never go back.

I could be wrong, but I believe that there may be another characteristic of darksiders that is not immediately evident. Most of them are high mileage, all-safe-season, any reason riders.

>
> WHO USES A CAR TIRE ON THEIR REFLEX?

I do!

1) 145/80R12 S-rated DOT-certified light truck/SUV/ATV tire; wider than the Hoop, taller than the 145/70, and no grinding needed. I believe that I have the only 'flex running this size.
2) Goodyear Winter President
3) Since December, 2009, it's rolled about 500 splendid miles
4) Where: Mostly Atlanta near-urban commuting. Style: conservative with the throttle and brake but never miss a great chance to lean. On a style scale from 1 (never more than 5 degrees from vertical) to 10 (road rash on both sides of the bike and holes in both knee pads), I'd be at most a 7.
5) Depending on your suspension settings, weight, and style, your splash guard could be at risk. So far, that's the only bad thing that I can say. Because of my weight, 205 (92 kilos) plus gear, I would run my Hoop at 34psi. I started with the car tire at 32psi and found that it was too much. The rear was over-sensitive. I reduced the pressure to 28psi and it calmed down beautifully. Despite it's "mud" rating, it rides smooth and quiet. The tire remains cool even after extended high-speed running. I gained 3mpg (about 1km/liter) at 65MPH (105 km/h).

I was extremely cautious in the lean at first because I take everyone's warnings and the integrity of my skin very seriously. Yes, it feels different but that's not a definitively specific analysis. A brand new Hoop feels different, too, compared to an old, worn-out one.

The first time I rolled out on the car tire, the change was dramatic. I'm certain that it is mostly due to difference in fundamental tire technology (radial vs. bias ply), the tire body structure (squared versus rounded), and the increased ride height. I noticed right away that the machine rolls much more freely. As for handling, the only way that I know how to describe it is that the rear rides slightly "up" into the turns. I would say it's the direct result of the body structure. Although it was a little unnerving at first, it has been an easy adjustment. After 500 miles, I can summarize my experience using this car tire on the rear of my beloved Reflex thus; "What's a Hoop?"

It will take mileage to determine any potential gains in longevity. The absolute best, safe (down to the wear mark) mileage I got from a rear Hoop was 12K miles (19K kilometers).

My confidence in the tire has grown rapidly. I'll get 8 more weeks of practice before the 3rd Annual Slayride.

Anyone needing a new, unused, never-mounted, recently obsolete 130/70-12 Hoop? I'll be selling my spare at a loss so that it won't be wasted.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER even THINK about using trailer tires! EVER!!!!

When considering all factors, I can think of only one situation where I would NOT suggest trying a GOOD automobile RADIAL tire on the rear of a Reflex; racing!

Oil type and change interval

I would like to know more about oil. More specifically synthetic oil
and the time/miles between changes. I know the recommended oil change
interval for the Reflex is every 4000 miles or 6 months but I have done
mine sooner at 3000 mile intervals. I ride enough that the bike doesn't
sit for 6 months without having the oil changed within that time frame.
Supposedly one could go longer between oil changes when using synthetic
oil, but how much longer/how much further? Also, at what point in your
mileage would it be advantageous to start using synthetic oil? It would
be good to see recommendations and rationale. I would suppose that oil
weights/viscosities would be determined like they are for non-synthetic
oil. That is; by ambient operating temperatures and load demands.

You can search google for comparisons and many were scientifically done.
One in particular
aimed at motorcycles is:

Thanks for the link to that article. It does confirm a suspicion I
had about the motorcycle oil 'hype'. Important for us scooter users
is the fact that the oil we use does NOT get mangled in a gear case
and by that virtue we don't neccessarily need to use motorcycle specific oil when an automotive type oil would be quite adequate.
Having said that, still I wonder what a general rule of thumb would
be as to to an appropriate frequency of oil changes for our Reflex
scooters when using a full synthetic or synthetic blend type
automotive oil.

Well as unscientific as this is, I generally try to do it around 3k. But
since I always check the dipstick
every day before riding, I also notice its color. If it gets to a certain
darkness I change it, but it's usually
around 3000. Anywhere between 2500 and 3000.

I also sniff it, and by 2500-3000 it doesn't smell fresh anylonger, it has
combustion odors to it.

The fact the engine only has the strainer screen and no filter (the
silverwing does) it's crucial for everyone
to give this due diligence!

Our scooter engine has nothing in common with what is considered to be a typical "motorcycle" engine. It is more like an auto engine.

It has no need for any of the special properties in motorcycle oil - it does not share its oil with either the clutch or the transmission; and it is not air-cooled, thus not needing the properties that accommodate the much greater expansion and contraction resulting from the lack of temperature control provided by our water-cooled system.

It also differs in that there is no significant oil PRESSURE (like that required in babbit-bearings, where pressurized oil is REQUIRED to prevent metal-to-metal bearing surface contact (the crankshaft uses ball bearings). Instead there is merely an oil FLOW, to provide a supply of lubricant.

It is also a mildly tuned engine, not putting forces as great as those in the screaming rice-rocket bikes.

The only downside is the lack of an oil filter. Yet the Honda (water cooled) Elites and Helix (and many others not imported to the US) have done well with our lowly debris screen for decades! And no, don't try to devise an oil filter - there isn't enough oil pressure to maintain adequate oil flow through a normal filter.

So if the oil smells bad or looks dirty, change it. It is the cheapest form of maintenance that offers the best bang for the buck. Otherwise, don't exceed the design engineer's recommendations...

For what it's worth

Try googling "synthetic oil" - and avoid the corporate sites - to get an objective input.

I was taught when checking the level of oil to smell and look at the color of the oil...

Perhaps "no one I AM AWARE OF has ever taken it off..." might be better?

Or "no one WHO HAS LIVED TO TELL ABOUT IT has ever taken it off..."

And how many have died because they did the k-mod, which deviated from honda engineering and now is mainstream. I did mine 32k miles ago.

Bruce,

Those who have tried it seem to be a close-knit group and share their experiences. I have yet to hear of any of them looking for a missing member who had darkside tires on their scooters. "Who has lived to tell about it is a stretch," I think, but I would not argue with adding the phrase "I am aware of." Problem with agreeing to that is that all that have reported on them here gave glowing reports and claim they would never go back. Don't you think that at least one of them would have spouted off with, "That's the worst mistake I've ever made. Damn near killed me!" if they had had a bad experience? Same story, BTW, on the SWing forum. All reports have been favorable.

Not to be a downer/bummer but......
I've taught my wife that if anything ever happens to me that I am unable to
communicate via email, to send a message to this and other groups that I
belong to.
I was on the (Kawasaki) W650 group (when I owned one) and we got a message
buried in a reply to a message that one of our members was involved in a
fatal accident. It provided us with knowledge and a way to grieve.

So..... once I switch to the darkside, you will know if I am involved in a
fatal accident brought about by my tire choice.

Hey - I've got the ladies Joe Rocket Ballistic XL jacket to go with this one! Pics to anyone who wants them. I'm asking $40 & shipping and it's been worn for about an hour. It never fit right, I'm too short-waisted.

Huh, you sound like me. Went out and spent 1 grand on riding jacket and pants + boots, gloves and a helmet and I have to have about 4 inches taken off the pants if I can find someone to do it. They have to know what they are doing. I am only 5"1". and they do not make petites for women. can you have it taken up? would it be worth it?

Tim, don't be discouraged....Talking about issues of our very fragile
mortality is seldom comfortable, but sometimes neccessary. Actually,
I think that is quite a thoughtful idea that you presented. Something
that I will do while times are good so to speak......... Because, you
never know when you will no longer be able to communicate with those
that you care about whether or not it is because of car tire induced
pre-decrepitudity.(it's a made up word, but you get the idea..right?)

Going darkside? WOW!!!.... Be warned though if you do; once you get
comfortable with the difference and finally adjust and gain some
confidence after some riding, you just might be another one making
that oath; "I'm never going back to Hoops."

(just maybe)
