Re: Useful life of Honda Reflex?--Mike B's tire configuration

Mike (and omnipresent Kohlerizer and Lurkers):
I read the Car_Tire_on_Reflex file under the Files section and found only two folks (including you)who use the car tire and Bruce's opposition stating basically that the engineers of the Reflex intended for moped tires and that if car tires were better, they would be used (because they cost less) and that the designer's wisdom should not be questioned (unless of course you are talking about the K-Mod ;> ). There are and have been countless engineering type posts on this awesome site that have critically analyzed other matters. It would be useful to really understand any opposition to using the car tire and determine whether it might actually be more stable and result in longer tire life, etc. Help us understand the pluses and minuses of the Car Tire Controversy!
Thanks for the heads upon on the photos.

I hung leather saddlebags over the bars. My DH drilled a little hole in the bottom of the rear panel and wired the bags down to keep them from blowing in the wind. I have used them on several trips and they have worked well.

OK, read post #54314 for more on the pluses and minuses of car tire use. I do need to make a correction on an item near the top of that
long post though. It pertains to the rubber compound of tires. The
rubber for car tires is softer than motorcycle tires and not the
other way around. Please do read the posting in it's entirety.

I once had a short list of known car tire users, but can't remember
where I put it. I do seem to recall though, that at the time, including myself, there were about 6 or so using a car tire on their
Reflex.

Now, without invoking a poll, how about a show of hands.......
I certainly am curious as to the number of car tire users.
Please no opposition replies, this is for those that actually
use a car tire on their Reflex.

WHO USES A CAR TIRE ON THEIR REFLEX?

If you would please, also include:

1) Tire specifications: size _ type _ speed, load and mileage ratings.
2) Tire name and manufacturer.
3) When was it installed?, current miles of use.
4) Where you live/ride and your riding style.
5) Comments: Likes and/or dislikes, would you do it again?, comments
on handling, wear etc. or any other comment on your car tire experience.

That should about cover it. THANX

I really like having gone to the "Darkside" and using car tires on my scoots. It handles differently than the standard Hoops, but it was
easy to adjust to and feels/handles like normal now. I'll never go back to standard issue treads again. Easier to get up onto the
centerstand may seem like a small issue, but for smaller lighter
riders this is a definite plus. Fuel economy is better than with standard tires, in fact it is why I changed from the 145/70 to the taller 155/80. No problems, no complaints.

Why would you want to use a car tire inplace of a motorcycle tire....
Hard to steer...
Poor gas miles...
Heavier...
List can go on...

Tony in Tenn, also a double darksider, After 36k miles I installed a car tire. I run a kenda 155 on the rear with 5k miles so far, made one trip riding double from Nashville to Atlanta and got better gas mileage and faster cruising speed. This is a result of the larger diameter rear tire. Took the interstate down and the back roads thru northern Alabama on the way home. I really enjoyed doing some sweepers which I took at full throttle, which was 70 mph. The last sweeper looked a little tighter and I approached it under full throttle until I felt the little woman getting nervous and backed off a bit. IMHO the car tire holds the road as good as any scoot tire. Added a scoot rear tire to the front recently but no real experience with this combo to date. I haven't had it out much this year. My majesty is set up for winter riding and so it is the preferred ride at this time.

I'm a DOT engineer....
How many pinkies do you need to move a car tire vs a motorcycle....
More weight and more surface area on the pavement....
It doesn't make sence to put on a car tire...  Harder on the bearings also...
A larger(taller) tire makes sence but a 13" tire on the Reflex is pretty good....

I suggest that you create a new - carefully thought-out - poll that asks the things you want to know. If you need help, I will do so.

It is a better - and less cluttering approach - than asking for "a show of hands..."

Or put together a better FILE to go in the FILES section - that covers the topic exhaustively - WITH APPROPRIATE DISCLAIMERS.

Thanks

occured. OOPS! Wait.... my bad.... DOT engineer, not dot connector.

> How many pinkies do you need to move a car tire vs a motorcycle....

WOW! I'm sure it would take alot in either case, but I don't know for
sure since I only have two to work with. I make full use of my hands
and arms and have no troubles at all controlling the bike. I was just
saying it would only be harder to do if you used just your pinky
finger. It is NOT harder to steer. Have you EVER tried riding a bike
with a standard tire set up and then also rode that bike with a car
tire? Hmmm?..... No? then how the hell would you know whether or not
that it was harder to steer?

> More weight and more surface area on the pavement....

Ah, yes, exactly. Just the right thing for a higher co-efficient
of friction. Exactly the thing you'd want and need for that oh so
intimate and controlled connection to the road.

> It doesn't make sence to put on a car tire...

Actually I think you're right about that... but,
it does make sense to put on a car tire.

> Harder on the bearings also...

I don't understand how that could be when a larger diameter tire
would actually be rotating less, so less wear, easier to roll over
bumps and with a larger body to absorb the jolts, and weight
difference of only about 2 LBS. (roughly the weight of 1/3 gal. of
gas.) between the Hoop and the 155/80.(Hoop = about 9 LBS and the
155/80R12 = about 11 LBS)

NO, NO, NO,..... A larger(taller) tire makes SENSE but a 13" tire on
the Reflex is pretty good... Great actually, but it has to be a 13"
scooter tire and be used up front. Car tires are not good really to
use up front. Dynamics are all wrong for that. Reflex uses a 12"
wheel on the rear and 13" wheel on the front.

In conclusion, I wonder what kind of person would just ignore a
simple request like:
Please no opposition replies, this is for those that actually
use a car tire on their Reflex.

Anyway, I suspect that there are not a great many of us(yet) that
do use a car tire on our Reflex scoots, so this shouldn't take long.

I'm feeling just a little cocky and a bit more irritated than usual
and having a low tolerance for smug so called educated types who can't spell or articulate logically. This world is full of educated so and sos. Sorry if it offends, but it is what it is. So I'll go
back to what I was doing and DOT engineers can go back to engineering
their DOTs or whatever it is they do.

Jim,

Those who have done it report just the opposite. Being a DOT engineer doesn't necessarily qualify you as an expert on this topic. I would say that the people who have done it and have experience with it are more qualified to comment on it than you or I are. There's a ton of posts on this topic and all of them from users are favorable. No one has taken it off after having moved to the darkside!
